At present, China is accelerating the construction of a new development pattern with the domestic cycle as the main body and the domestic and international double cycle promoting each other.

Cross-border e-commerce, as a new trade mode and new trade infrastructure such as overseas warehouses, on the one hand, can promote more global high-quality commodities to enter the Chinese market, satisfy the demand of domestic consumption upgrading, and allow global enterprises to enjoy the dividends of the development of China’s market; on the other hand, it can help more “Made in China” to go out to overseas consumers to enjoy high-quality Chinese commodities, and enhance China’s brand name and image. On the other hand, it can help more “Made in China” go abroad, so that overseas consumers can enjoy high-quality Chinese goods and enhance the international influence of Chinese brands. This is of great significance to smooth the domestic and international double cycle.

At present, the development of China’s cross-border e-commerce industry is characterized by three aspects:

Fast development speed

Statistics show that over the past five years, the scale of China’s cross-border e-commerce trade has grown by more than 10 times.2024 In the first quarter, the import and export of cross-border e-commerce amounted to 577.6 billion yuan, an increase of 9.6%, of which 448 billion yuan was exported, an increase of 14%. Under the current background of increasing global trade uncertainty and continuous pressure on traditional offline trade, cross-border e-commerce, with its large scale, high activity and innovation, and strong flexibility, has better adapted to the new changes in the trade environment and met the personalized needs of foreign trade enterprises. Driven by cross-border e-commerce, new foreign trade infrastructure such as overseas warehouses are also developing.

Accelerating transformation and upgrading

In recent years, the costs of cross-border e-commerce enterprises have risen in terms of advertising, taxes, logistics, and compliant operations. Transformation and upgrading and model innovation are both inevitable requirements and a general trend. Cross-border e-commerce enterprises should not simply be satisfied with “opening stores, selling goods and earning profits”, but also improve their ability to perceive the market demand of the destination country, optimize their products and services in a targeted manner to better meet the needs of consumers in the destination country, and thus enhance their market competitiveness. Cross-border e-commerce enterprises also need to promote market diversification to reduce risk. In addition to the European and American markets, they can also focus on emerging markets. In addition, operation standardization, intelligence, greening, etc. are also the future transformation direction of cross-border e-commerce enterprises.

“Cross-border e-commerce + industrial zone” new wind mouth of foreign trade

“Cross-border e-commerce + industrial zone” has become a new wind mouth of foreign trade. Now, some cross-border e-commerce enterprises have launched the “full hosting” model, i.e., to address the shortcomings of some traditional enterprises and merchants who lack cross-border e-commerce experience and talents, and to empower and support them to transform their exports, open up the international market, and expand overseas business opportunities. This will help lower the entry threshold of cross-border e-commerce industry, promote the in-depth combination of cross-border e-commerce platforms and traditional industries, enhance the ability of relevant enterprises and merchants to explore the global market and adapt to the diversified market demand, and promote the transformation, upgrading and branding development of “Made in China”.

In the future, under the support of a series of policies, the cross-border e-commerce industry will accelerate the deep integration with new technologies such as big models and artificial intelligence, continue to innovate application scenarios and service modes, and promote the digital transformation of international trade. Cross-border e-commerce superimposed on the advantages of “Made in China” will also better empower “Made in China” and polish the Chinese brand.
