The Central Economic Work Conference proposed that “we should accelerate the cultivation of new dynamics in foreign trade, consolidate the basic foreign investment in foreign trade, and expand the trade in intermediate goods, trade in services, digital trade, and cross-border e-commerce exports.” In recent years, cross-border e-commerce as the fastest growing, the greatest potential, the strongest driving role of foreign trade new business, showing great market vitality and growth resilience, become a new bright color in the field of foreign trade.
According to customs estimates, in 2023, China’s cross-border e-commerce import and export totaled 2.38 trillion yuan, an increase of 15.6%. Among them, exports were 1.83 trillion yuan, up 19.6%; imports were 548.3 billion yuan, up 3.9%.
The rapid development of cross-border e-commerce not only meets the diversified and personalized needs of domestic consumers, but also helps China’s products reach the world, becoming an important driving force for the development of foreign trade.
Cross-border e-commerce relies on a flexible, efficient and resilient supply chain, injecting new momentum into global trade growth.
As night falls, the warehouses of cross-border e-commerce enterprises in the Baiyun International Airport Comprehensive Bonded Zone (South) in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, are brightly lit, and thousands of cross-border e-commerce exports are packaged according to orders in the warehouses, and after completing the customs formalities, they will soon be transported to the airport to be delivered to the hands of consumers around the world on international flights.
With the deepening development of globalization, more and more Chinese enterprises will look to overseas markets, seeking greater development space, cross-border e-commerce exports is one of the important path.
In 2023, the General Office of the State Council issued the Opinions on Promoting the Stable Scale and Excellent Structure of Foreign Trade, which puts forward, “Promote the healthy and sustainable innovative development of cross-border e-commerce”, “Encourage localities to combine their industrial and endowment advantages, innovate and build comprehensive cross-border e-commerce pilot zones, and actively develop the ‘cross-border e-commerce + industrial belt’. ‘cross-border e-commerce + industrial belt’ model, and drive cross-border e-commerce business-to-business exports”.
In the face of growing global trade uncertainty and a trade downturn, cross-border e-commerce, relying on a flexible, efficient and resilient supply chain, provides global consumers with more value-for-money products, and injects a new impetus to global trade growth.
The rapid development of digital technology and the promotion of regional cooperation will create a better environment for the development of cross-border e-commerce. It is recommended to continuously implement the various policies that have been introduced to stabilize foreign trade. At the same time, in view of the new situation and new tasks, we should promote the introduction of new policies and new initiatives in a timely manner, improve the cross-border e-commerce industry chain and ecological chain, and gradually form a series of management systems and economic and trade rules to adapt to and lead the development of global cross-border e-commerce, so as to further enhance the international competitiveness of cross-border e-commerce in China.
